چکیده

36 Our objective in this study was to assess passive mechanical stiffness in the ankle of chronic hemiparetic stroke 37 survivors and to compare it with those of healthy young and older (age-matched) individuals. Given the importance 38 of the ankle during locomotion, an accurate estimate of passive ankle stiffness would be valuable for locomotor 39 rehabilitation, potentially providing a measure of recovery and a quantitative basis to design treatment protocols. 40 Using a novel ankle robot, we characterized passive ankle stiffness both in sagittal and in frontal planes by applying 41 perturbations to the ankle joint over the entire range of motion with subjects in a relaxed state. We found that 42 passive stiffness of the affected ankle joint was significantly higher in chronic stroke survivors than in healthy adults 43 of a similar cohort, both in the sagittal as well as frontal plane of movement in three out of four directions tested 44 with indistinguishable stiffness values in plantarflexion direction. Our findings are comparable to the literature, thus 45 indicating its plausibility and, to our knowledge, report for the first time passive stiffness in the frontal plane for 46 persons with chronic stroke and older healthy adults. 47 48 49 50 51 52 53 54

Ankle ROM and stiffness measured at rest and during gait in individuals with and without diabetic sensory neuropathy.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of our study was to examine the relationship between ankle dorsiflexion (DF) range of motion (ROM) and stiffness measured at rest (passively) and plantar loading during gait in individuals with and without diabetes mellitus (DM) and sensory neuropathy. Specifically, we sought to address three questions for this at-risk patient population: (1) Does peak passive DF ROM pr...

Changes in passive ankle stiffness and its effects on gait function in people with chronic stroke.

Mechanical impedance of the ankle is known to influence key aspects of ankle function. We investigated the effects of robot-assisted ankle training in people with chronic stroke on the paretic ankle's passive stiffness and its relationship to overground gait function. Over 6 wk, eight participants with residual hemiparetic deficits engaged in a visuomotor task while seated that required dorsifl...

Lower extremity passive range of motion in community-ambulating stroke survivors.

BACKGROUND Physical therapists may prescribe stretching exercises for individuals with stroke to improve joint integrity and to reduce the risk of secondary musculoskeletal impairment. While deficits in passive range of motion (PROM) exist in stroke survivors with severe hemiparesis and spasticity, the extent to which impaired lower extremity PROM occurs in community-ambulating stroke survivors...

Biomechanical changes at the ankle joint after stroke.

The resistance of the relaxed ankle to slow displacement over the joint movement range was measured on both sides of a group of hemiparetic stroke patients, in whom spasticity had been established for at least one year and who showed no clinical signs of contractures. The ankle joints of the age-matched normal subjects were flexible over most of the movement range, showing dramatically increasi...
